My Internship Projects

This page will touch on some of the projects I worked on during my undergraduate internship from January 2023 to May 2023 with Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes in Eau Claire, WI. I served as a program intern working to assist and create programming opportunities in Eau Claire and the surrounding areas. Additionally, other responsibilities included developing curriculum, establishing relationships with location partners/organizations, and engaging with the community.

World Thinking Day

This is an annual Girl Scout holiday, encouraging kids globally to explore issues that affect their country and others, how to become aware, and how to make lasting change.

In 2023, the themes was "Our World, Our Peaceful Future: The environment, peace, and security." I hosted a booth for 6th - 12th graders focused on learning about composting, understanding ecocide, and pledging to protect the ecosystems around us.

Each of the post-it notes on the posterboard represents a Girl Scout pledging to protect the environment.

Science Trekkers

In collaboration with the Women and Gender Minorities in STEM (WiSTEM) group on UW-Eau Claire's campus, we offered STEM experiences to the kids in our area. Given the prevalence of gender stereotypes in fields such as these, we work to dismantle those in a supportive, non-competitive environment.

Virtual eTroop

In March 2023, I planned and led the monthly meeting for the virtual eTroop we had for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors (6th-12th grade). This meeting went through all 5 steps needed for all the kids to earn a badge correlating to their age group/level of Girl Scouts. Based on the topic and badge, I researched the various activity options, integrated updated material, and had a hands-on experiment to keep the kids engaged.

Girl Scouts of Distinction

This is an annual awards ceremony which recognizes the kids who have earned a Bronze, Silver, or Gold Award based on their community projects. Each award correlates to an age group, hours dedicated, and other aspects. Additionally, adult volunteers are recognized for their years of service, continued support, and other institutional honors. For the 2023 ceremony, we had over 200 attendees.

My responsibilities included creating an activity booklet for attendees, emceeing the program, and other preparation needs such as setup.

Reaching Out Programming

at Altoona Boys and Girls Club

Reaching Out is a type of programming offered as an alternative to the traditional Girl Scout troop. Focused on removing barriers such as finances and transportation, this type of programming is provided to children in low-income areas for free. As a result, those who attend are able to gain the Girl Scout experience at their schools and/or after school program.

One of the main goals I had during my internship was to set up, plan, and implement this type of programming. I was able to do so at the Altoona Boys and Girls Club in Altoona, WI. With the assistance of my department supervisor Carrie Andringa and fellow intern Kelly Coushman (shown in the picture on the left side), programming was offered from mid-April to mid-May. The curriculum focused on life skills, one of the core program pillars of the Girl Scouts organization, and dove into subjects such as diversity, social-emotional learning, and friendship.
